The Original Pattern (2017)

Some quilt patterns have a season.
Others quietly stick around, waiting for the right time to become what they were always meant to be.
That's exactly how Yankee Doodle Dandy has felt to me.
I first designed this pattern nearly nine years ago, and at the time it was just one quilt—a scrappy throw that quickly became one of my favorites. I've loved seeing so many of your versions over the years, but every Fourth of July season I'd find myself thinking the same thing:
"One day I'm going to give this pattern the update it deserves."
Well... this year I finally did.
This wasn't just a pattern refresh. It was a complete reboot.
Why It Needed a Reboot & What's New
Instead of one size, Yankee Doodle Dandy is now available in four:
- Throw
- Wall Hanging
- Mini
- Petite

Whether you're looking for a statement quilt for your sofa, a seasonal wall hanging, or a quick weekend project, there's now a version that fits.
But that's not all that changed.
Scrappy vs. Gingham
Along with the original scrappy design, I added a brand-new Gingham variation that gives the quilt a completely different personality while keeping the same classic Americana feel.

A Vertical Layout, Too
I also included a vertical layout option for both the scrappy and gingham versions. If you're making a wall hanging, this layout follows the traditional way of displaying the American flag vertically, with the stars in the upper left corner. It was a detail I'd always wanted to include, and I'm so happy it's finally part of the pattern.

Fabric Details
For the gingham version, I used Ruby and Bee Solids in bright, crisp solids that really pop and make for a great gingham pattern with the use of color. These colors are: Capsicum, Perfect Pink, Posy, Marjorelle Blue, Sky, Aquamarine, and Cream Puff.

For the backing, I couldn't resist the adorable ice cream cone print by Melody Miller's fabric line Best Day Ever for Ruby Star Society—it felt like the perfect finishing touch for a quilt that celebrates summer.

I also loved quilting this sample. Kaitlyn at Knot + Thread Quilting quilted it with the Stella Tiles pantograph, and it was exactly the modern texture I had envisioned. It adds just enough movement without competing with the design.
One of my favorite parts of redesigning old patterns is seeing them through fresh eyes. As pattern writers, we grow. We learn better ways to write instructions, improve diagrams, refine construction, and think through how quilters actually use our patterns. This reboot gave me the chance to keep everything I loved about the original while making it easier to sew and giving you more ways to make it your own.
More Than Just a Quilt
One of the things I was most excited about with this reboot was dreaming up all the different ways these new sizes could be used.
I've made a few versions of Yankee Doodle Dandy over the years so for the first time on the 4th of July I had all four versions hanging in the front of my house all together. Seeing them like that made me so happy! The versions are: (L-R) the brand new gingham version, the faded/beachy version, a bright pop-art version in pink and aqua (think Andy Warhol), and the original saturated version. I honestly can't decide which one is my favorite!

Seeing them all together really reminded me how versatile this design can be. The exact same pattern takes on a completely different personality depending on the fabrics you choose.
I also had so much fun decorating with the smaller sizes.
The Mini is the perfect size for a front door quilt. I simply attached it using a couple of Command Strips and safety pins on the back of the quilt, making it easy to hang without permanently attaching anything. It's such a fun way to add a little patriotic charm to your entryway. I think it's time to normalize hanging a mini quilt on your front door!

But the Petite might be my favorite surprise of all.
Instead of hanging it on the wall, I stitched one onto a sweatshirt and another onto a T-shirt. They instantly became wearable quilted art and were such a fun way to celebrate quilting beyond the sewing room. I love finding new ways to enjoy quilts, and these smaller sizes open up so many creative possibilities.

I hope these ideas inspire you to think beyond the bed or the couch. Whether you hang one on your front door, display it on a wall, wear it, or gift it to someone you love, I designed these new sizes to be quilts you'll actually use and enjoy all season long.
Thank you to everyone who has loved Yankee Doodle Dandy over the past nine years. It means more than you know when a pattern gets a second life because of the community that has continued to make it.
I honestly think this version is the one I always imagined.
