Modern Mosaic Quilt Pattern: A Whimsical, Mid-Century-Inspired Quilt

Modern Mosaic: My Happiest Quilt Pattern Ever

Hello, my quilty friends!

They call it the happiest cruise that ever sailed, but I’m officially calling this the happiest quilt pattern that ever was. Modern Mosaic is my fabric love letter to Disneyland’s It’s a Small World ride and the brilliant art of my creative hero, Mary Blair.

Growing up in Anaheim, I've been going to Disneyland since I was a toddler (Check out this photo of me and my Dad riding "It's a Small World" back when I was pretty small myself). My siblings and I used to pop over to Disneyland after school (yes—this was a real thing, and yes—it ruined me for all other after-school activities forever). Those bold shapes, whimsical colors, and joyful symmetry seeped into my creative brain and never left. You handle it beautifully, whispered my inner child every time I tried something playful on paper… and later, in fabric.

So naturally, this quilt had to exist.

When I started sketching Modern Mosaic, I wanted to capture that exact feeling—color and connection, all working together in harmony. A little bit mid-century, a little bit magical, and a whole lot of joy. The shapes echo the rhythm of the ride; the palette options let you play; the layout feels both structured and full of wonder.

So Many Colorways!

One of my favorite parts of designing Modern Mosaic was watching how dramatically it changed with every new palette I tried. A shift in color is like a shift in mood—soft and dreamy, bold and bright, cool and coastal, or sweet like a bag of taffy. Each version tells its own little story, and I love that the pattern is flexible enough to let you play, experiment, and follow the colors that make your heart light up. Here’s a closer look at all the different palettes I stitched up while designing this quilt.

Candy Shop

This palette is cotton candy meets sidewalk chalk: bubblegum pink, sky blue, lemon drop, and a pop of tangerine. It’s cheerful, breezy, and a little nostalgic—like wandering through the Small World queue on a warm day. The cool blues add just the right amount of calm, while the warm golds pull everything back into balance. This version is soft, sweet, and delightfully graphic.

Pastels

Soft mint, lemonade yellow, ballet pink, and the gentlest peach—this palette is basically a floaty little cloud of sweetness. It feels calm and airy but still colorful, with each block looking like it was dipped in pastel watercolor. If your heart beats for low-volume, vintage-storybook vibes, this colorway brings the dreaminess. And if you want to make this exact version, you can click the link below to grab the...

Rapunzel

This one is all sunshine-sweet sherbet tones—raspberry, watermelon, peach, and a touch of mango—all layered on a soft background that makes every shape pop. It feels playful but still polished, like a dreamy summer afternoon turned into fabric. The high-contrast blocks show off the geometry beautifully, and the mood is pure joy. If you want your Modern Mosaic to feel bright, happy, and full of personality, this colorway nails it. If you'd like to make this exact version, click the link below to grab the...

Gerald & Becky

Cool aquas, fresh limes, deep teals, and breezy cornflower blue give this version a crisp, modern, coastal feel. It’s calming but still full of movement—like a quilted seascape made of bold shapes and soothing tones. Perfect for anyone who loves color but leans toward cooler palettes. This one feels fresh, graphic, and clean. ...with a nod to my two favorite ocean-going Pixar characters.

Cherry Bomb

If Modern Mosaic had an exclamation point, this would be it. Hot pink, coral, and bright red come together for a quilt that is bold, saturated, and totally unafraid of being the star of the room. It’s dramatic in the best possible way—clean shapes, crisp contrast, and so much energy. If you want a quilt that says “fun” from across the room, this is the one.

Sprinkles

This might be the happiest version of them all. The confetti print background adds instant charm (truly—it’s impossible to look at this one without smiling), and the pastel-meets-sorbet palette lands right in the sweet spot of whimsy. There’s a playful rhythm to this quilt that feels like a celebration of color. If Modern Mosaic had a birthday party outfit, this would be it.

Taffy

This palette is bright, joyful, and wonderfully eclectic—pink, coral, mint, aqua, and leaf green all playing together in a way that feels like a bag of saltwater taffy spilled across your cutting table. The variety of hues keeps your eye moving from block to block, and the whole quilt feels energetic without being chaotic. If you love a modern rainbow moment, this colorway is such a fun choice.

I hope you love this pattern as much as I do...

This quilt began with a ride that’s been part of my story since childhood. The colors, the shapes, the playful precision… they’ve always reminded me that creativity doesn’t have to pick between fun and focus. It can be both. And this pattern is my way of bringing a little of that magic into your sewing room.

If you’re ready to add a pop of mid-century wonder, a sprinkle of whimsy, and a whole lot of color to your world, Modern Mosaic is here to make your sewing room the happiest place on earth.

Happy sewing,
