The Bear Paw is a classic block, and it’s one of my favorites to make. This free tutorial walks you through one 14" block, then shows you how to turn 20 of them into a 66" x 82" quilt.
Each block uses three fabrics: a low-volume background, orange for the claws and center, and black for the paws. Swap in your own colors to make it for Halloween, Christmas, the Fourth of July, or any time of year.
Inside you’ll find:
- Cutting charts for each block
- Half square triangles two at a time, plus a scrappy one-at-a-time option
- Step-by-step diagrams for the paws, the block, and the quilt top
- Pressing directions at every step so your seams nest
- A sashing and cornerstone layout for the finished quilt
It’s a great project for confident beginners who are comfortable with half square triangles and ready for a quilt that looks harder than it is.
